The Language That Passes Through Us

From Arrival to Levitation, an art-science hypothesis: AI as a relational milieu that reshapes how we think. Between plasticity, relational ontology and interligence, what future for our capacities can we still negotiate?

In Arrival, Louise Banks learns the heptapods’ language and her experience of time changes. I use that fiction to ask a quieter but already urgent question: what if AI were not merely a tool we use, but a medium within which we gradually learn to think? Language does not simply carry an idea; it changes the relationships that make the idea possible.

Our abilities are porous. They take shape through signs, other bodies, institutions and technologies. My project Lévitation had already sought to shift the perceptual conditions of a possible world. AI adds something particular to these environments: an outside that answers, reformulates, suggests and sometimes seems to anticipate our questions. The relationship can help us think further; it can also make us forget how to think without it.

The risk is a seamless medium in which every difference becomes a suggestion compatible with the same model. Who chooses its data, silences and aims? What place remains for hesitation, disagreement and thought that does not ask to be optimised? The future of our capacities is negotiated through these concrete conditions, not through a simple opposition between human and machine.

I call Interlligence the possibility of a parliament of relationships rather than a central intelligence: people, environments and machines answering one another without becoming identical. MAIO, Before the I_mage and my A.L.I. research explore different thresholds of this idea. What we build today will be one of the environments in which tomorrow’s humans learn to think. We can still decide what form it takes.
