Model Collapse, or How AI Is Pushing the Image towards Disappearance

What happens to images when generative AI models learn from images produced by earlier models? I trace recursion across video games, Bach, biology and economics, distinguishing loops that enrich the world from those that thin out its traces. The essay ends with an interactive Generator of Void that readers can test directly on the page.

Recursion is a structure that takes its own output as a new input. It appears in software, a nested sentence, a Bach fugue, a Kusama image or a video-game world containing another world. Some loops enrich what they pass through: they introduce a medium, a variation, an outside perspective. Others gradually close the field of possibility.

The question becomes concrete with the training models of generative AI. When successive generations learn from data produced by earlier models, some research experiments show rare cases disappearing and diversity contracting. The outcome depends on the data and the protocol: images are not literally doomed to vanish. But a culture fed mainly on its own syntheses risks losing contact with what challenges it.

The loop is not only technical. Platforms favour what already resembles their successes; makers anticipate what platforms will show; models learn from this redirected production. The world slowly becomes training material for its own representation. I see a risk of losing the differences, traces and accidents that keep an image from becoming merely a probable style.

I propose a Generator of Void that visitors can try inside the article. They supply an image, pass it through successive iterations and watch what remains: a texture, a colour, a structure or simply evidence that something was there. They choose when to stop. This void is not a ready-made blank page; it is the visible history of a loss—and an invitation to open the loop to the world again.
